The Greek Ramblers Association and also
the European Ramblers Association
proposed that the Cyprus route be added
to the European long distance path E4
network.
The full path starts at the
rock of Gibraltar and continues up
through Spain, France, Switzerland,
Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and
through into mainland Greece. It then
hops for sea to Crete and then again to
it's current end stage in Paphos
Cyprus. Both islands are linked by sea
and air.
As the path starts in Larnaca(Larnaka)
at the airport it winds it's way across
country via Agia Napa first of all
through the forest at Cape Greko (Pidalio).
Back via Agios Saranta towards Protaras
and then through to the Sotira Forest.
The path then takes in the site of the
dam at Liopetri, before heading of for
the forest at Ormideia. After leaving
Ormideia the path progresses on to Agia
Varvara and the Stavrovouni Forest were
it winds up to a height of about 400m
above sea level.
Delikipos is the next point for the
E4 path and then across the distict
boundary to the Manchairas Forest up to
Fikardou.
The path then meanders towards the
Troodos Mountains through the forest of
Adelfori and the Troodos Forest taking
in on the way the Waterfall at Kalidonia.
From here it goes to the forest station
between Selladi tou Stavrou and Stravros
tis Psokas.
Coming back to the slightly lower
lying lands of the Akamas Peninsular and
to the Baths of Aphrodite.
The E4 path now takes us to Paphos
and the International Airport at Timi.
It takes the scenic coast road which you
would normally use a 4x4 to access past
the Turtle Beaches at Lara and to the
Avakas Gorge. Taking us back inland
slightly to Pegiea to the 600m village
of Koili and through to Tsada taking in
the view of the 18 hole championship
golf course on the way.
The final leg of the journey goes
over to Episkopi into Agia Marinouda
were an excellent meze meal can be
enjoyed at the Santa Marina restaurant.
Into Acheleia to Agios Theodosios, Agios
Leontios and the airport.
The whole journey would take from as
little as 181hours to 238hours or if you
want to walk 7hours a day it would take
about a month to complete the whole
thing. Apart from being an
accomplishment to finish in one go you
get to see the whole island.
Of course you could make it longer by
adding in the Nature Trails around each
location probably making the journey a
couple of days longer.
There is an E4
guide book detailing the full routes
that can be taken, available from the
CTO (Cyprus Tourism Office), if you
would like a copy please let us know and
we can arrange for this to be at your
accommodation on arrival.
