Here is Paphos there are many routes
to take on a Jeep Safari, this means
that your only dilemma is which one to
take. You could of course take
them all over the course of your stay
and get the full overview of the island.
Akamas Jeep Safari
Dependant on which company you choose to
take this adventure with of course
depends on the route that you take.
Whichever you do choose though will
ensure that you have a great day out.
A typical tour will go as follows.
Pick up from your hotel between
8.30am and 8.45am, on your way to the
Akamas Peninsular you may stop off at
Georges Reptile Park to get an idea of
what you should look out for on your
trip up the coast.
Of course it's now time for
11s-is so a short refreshment stop at
the local cafe will keep us going until
lunch time. After coffee you will
set off up towards Avakas Gorge,
limestone walls of up to 30meters rising
above you. Once you have had a
stroll up into the gorge and taken a few
minutes rest you will head off again up
the
Akamas
towards Lara Bay.
Here you will see evidence of Green and
Loggerhead Turtles who return to this
beach each year between the
months of May and September to nest.
Your guide will be very informative and
dependant on when you visit you may be
lucky enough to see some hatchlings
awaiting release into the sea once they
are better able to survive.
As you then head up and over the
Akamas Forest you come to the village of
Neo Chorion and the driver is hungry so
a stop at a local taverna for lunch is
called for. This is a meze with
local wine included in the price. Once
you have finished lunch there is time to
wander through the village and take in
the beauty of the old stone houses and
there rambling gardens.
For those who wish to retain and
those who wish to recapture their
youthful looks you will head onwards to
the Baths of Aphrodite, the Goddess of
Love who used to bathe at this location
with her lover Adonis.
After a swim and/or sun bathe at one
of the bays on the Latchi/Polis side of
the Peninsular you hop back into the
Jeep for the homeward journey through
the hillside villages of the Akamas
returning back at your hotel for around
4.30pm.
As trips to the Akamas Peninsular do
vary, please check with your tour
company of the landmarks visited before
booking if there is something in
particular that you would like to see.
Troodos Jeep Safari
Pick up from your hotel will be
slightly earlier between 8.15am and
8.30am, this is due to driving a little
further on your days adventure into the
green heart of Cyprus.
The first stop of this adventure may
be the peaceful village of Panayia, the
birth place of Archbishop Makarios III
the first President of Cyprus.
There is an opportunity of visiting his
residence which has been turned into a
small museum before heading to a local
taverna for refreshments.
Your journey will then take you
through the Cedar Valley, which is said
to be one of the most beautiful areas of
the island as there are thousands of age
old cedar trees. The national
animal of Cyprus the Moufflon live in
this region also and if you are lucky
you may catch a glimpse of this elusive
wild sheep.
Onwards again up to 3750feet above
sea level to the magnificent Kykkos
Monastery, Makarios III entered here at
the age of 13 as a novice and returned
many times during his life. He was
buried a short distance away from the
monastery after his sudden death in
1977.
Your driver is again getting hungry
so a stop at the village of Promodos
brings a meze lunch of small local
dished is served with wine. A walk
around the village will help ease the
discomfort of having to try everything
that was brought to the table,
some things more than once.
If architecture or wine are your
thing the next stop at Omodhos will be
right up your street. A chance to
view the traditional Cypriot buildings
and sample the locally produce wine can
be had by all before heading back into
Paphos and your hotel for around 4.30pm.
