Kathikas Nature Trail
Heading North the first trail
that you come to is on the outskirts of
a pleasant winery village called
Kathikas. There are a couple of good
roads to this location.
First you can head up through the old
town of Paphos onto what is know as the
Polis Road (namely because it's the road
that goes to Polis!) It's official name
is Leoforos Evagora Pallikaridi. You
will the quiet village of Tsada and then into
Stroumpi, just as you are leaving
Stroumpi there is the turning for
Kathikas and Theletra. Once you are into
Kathikas you need to turn of left
through the village heading onto the
E709. Along this road you will come
across the Trakkos Donkey Farm. You can
park your car here so that when you
return from your walk you can pop into
the cafe and enjoy a warming cup of
coffee during January February time or a
refreshing cold drink during the summer.
If the car park is full 50m further
down the road there is a large lay-by in
which you can park and then walk back to
the start of the trail. If you are in luck you will not only
see the donkeys from the farm but also
the shepherds moving their goats about
the hillside.
The walk takes you in a loop of about
3kms (1.8miles) so will only take about
30 - 40 minutes for you to complete -
good for early evening to watch the sun
set out over Pegia and Coral Bay which
of course is the other route you could
take to reach this pleasant short walk.
I have to say though that some places
were a bit rugged and may be unsuitable
for persons with walk disabilities.
Adonis & Aphrodite Nature Trail
This trail can again be reach by
following the Polis Road North, once
reaching Stroumpi you can again take the
turning for Kathikas and head for Latchi
and continue out along the E713 towards
the Baths of Aphrodite OR stay on the
Stroumpi road and head to Polis then cut
across to Latchi again heading for the
E713.
A wild way to travel to this location
will involve the use of a 4x4 jeep/truck
and some determination.
Travelling up the Tomb of the Kings
road out towards Coral Bay and continue
passed towards the Ayios Georgious (St
Georges) peninsular. Just before
reaching St Georges there is a turning
to the right towards the Akamas
Peninsular and Nature Reserve. You will
know you are there when you see the
donkey at the side of the road with the
funny hat. The road initially is
tarmaced (or concreted) but then as you
dip down towards the White River beach
and restaurant the road starts to turn
into 4x4 land. Which of course all adds
to the excitement of the day.
This road also leads to the beautiful
Lara Bay Turtle reserve beaches.
However, for this adventure we will
drive on passed.
The road continues for about 11km
before forking (you should be in the
lower part of the Akamas forest at this
stage). Take the right hand fork.
Approximately 3km up this road you will
come across a dog leg crossroad. Take
the right turn and then at the next fork
(1km)again take the right. The start of
the trail is 4kms along this road. You
will pass the Pyrgros Rigenas Ruins
which actually crosses the trails path
about 2kms so you can tell you're
heading in the right direction.
This trail starting at the Bath of
Aphrodite is slightly longer at 8kms
(5miles) but looks out in part over the
picturesque Ayios Georgious Inlet and
the Blue Lagoon at Fontana Amarosa.
Ayios Minas
Three walks at this location which
are best
reached by main and off road via the
good old route of Kathikas. I'm sure
that you are all aware of how to get
here now but if you have not read the
previous details here you go. Head out
up through the old town of Paphos up the
Polis Road up into Stroumpi and then
take the left turn to Kathikas just
through the Stroumpi village. Keep on
this road up to Ineia, once here the
road turns to 4x4 land, head towards Smigies and the Ayios Minas church.
The three walks start here but one
heads south and is a short 3km (1.8mile)
route and starts and finishes at the Smigies picnic site.
The other two routes
head north a longer route at about 5km (3miles)
this route can also be done as a half loop at
2.5km(1.5miles). This again starts and
finishes at the picnic site.
Troodos - Stavros & Selladi tou Stavrou
High in the Troodos Mountain forest
(1000ft) lies the Forest Station.
Surrounding the station there are 3
great walks and picnic areas to keep you
going to the end.
The Chorteri Nature Trail which is
approximately 5km(8miles) has a starting
point on the road between Selladi tou
Stavrou and the Stavros tis Psokas
(Forest Station) This goes up to 1100ft
so not for the faint hearted, definitely
worth taking the old camera if not the
new. The views down to the sea at
Argaka are stunning.
Again a circular trail but shorter at
2.6km(1.5miles) starting from a point
near to Selladi tou Stavrou.
